A Wood & Water Wooden Boat Photography Session

on Green Lake, Wisconsin

Some guests come to us with a moment. Joe came with a lifetime, and a restored wooden Grand-Craft he'd dreamed about since childhood. This is his Wood & Water session, a wooden boat photography experience we shot at sunset on Green Lake, Wisconsin.

He'd dreamed about a wooden boat since he first found Green Lake. A sign painter and craftsman by trade, Joe brought that same eye for detail to the water, and eventually to Joe Norton, one of the country's most respected wooden boat builders and restorers. That first conversation started a friendship, and a string of boats, that's lasted years.

A Life Built Around Wood

Wood has always found its way into how Joe lives. In his old house, a small wooden fishing boat hung mounted from the ceiling. In his new home, half a wooden hull has been built into his bar. Long before Puddle Duck ever touched Green Lake, wood was already part of the architecture of his life.

Then years passed, the way years do, until a friend told him something simple and true: you're not getting any younger. Joe called Joe Norton again, and the hunt began.

Puddle Duck, the Only Grand-Craft on Green Lake

That search became Puddle Duck, the only Grand-Craft on Green Lake today. Joe worked alongside Joe Norton through the restoration, helping bring her back to water-worthy condition. This wasn't their first boat together. It was the latest in a string of them, each one a little closer to the dream Joe carried since childhood.

A Sunset Session on Green Lake

We met Joe on the water at sunset for his Wood & Water session. The light caught the wood grain the way it only does for a few minutes a day, gold sinking into the lake, the boat glowing from the inside out. We caught him mid-drive, his home behind him in the distance, one hand on the wheel and decades of patience behind his eyes.

This is what Wood & Water sessions are built for. Not a boat on display. A dream, finally on the water, finally seen.

"I have dreamt about a wooden boat since I was a child. I put years of effort into finding and restoring my Grand-Craft. I wanted the photographs to feel honest and thoughtful, like a true reflection of what this boat represents in my life, and that came through in every image." Joe

He walked away with two heirloom albums and a large fine art print, and he's already planning to retire older artwork in his home to make room for these and more. As of today Joe has placed an order with us for five more custom fine art prints to fill his home. Puddle Duck earned her place on the walls and in our hearts the same way she earned her place on the water.
