The Story and Ethos Behind Eighth Square Studio
My grandfather handed me a 35mm film camera when I was young. It was heavy and mechanical, worn at the edges, and smelled faintly of something I could not name at the time — though I would later recognize it as the particular scent of a life well-documented. I did not know then that it would change the way I see the world. But it did.
I spent hours in the darkroom during college, pursuing a minor in art and photography while learning something far more valuable than technique. I learned to slow down. To see with intention rather than just look. There was something almost sacred about watching an image surface in the developer tray — that quiet emergence of a moment that had passed but had not disappeared. That process shaped everything I would go on to do behind a lens.
In the years since, I have carried a camera across the globe — through cities, mountain ranges, open water, and into the most intimate spaces people would trust me to enter. I have documented galas and grief, laughter and reclamation, brands stepping into clarity and individuals stepping into themselves. My tools have evolved, moving from film to mirrorless systems, from analog darkrooms to hand-touched digital editing. But my approach has not changed: every session is an act of intentional documentation. Every image is a collaboration built on trust.
What drew me specifically to the work we now do at Eighth Square Studio was the realization that the moments people most need documented are often the ones they postpone. The chapter they have finally arrived at. The body they have spent years learning to inhabit. The brand that finally reflects the level they have reached. The bond with a companion they cannot imagine ever losing. These are not ordinary photographs. They are evidence of something real.
Ashley and I built Eighth Square Studio around a philosophy we return to every time we work with a new client: growth should be visible. The name itself comes from the final square on a chessboard — the place where a piece that has advanced with intention becomes more of itself. Not through a leap, but through presence and earned arrival. That is the philosophy behind every session we take on.
We are not a high-volume studio. We do not outsource our editing or rush our process. We work with a small number of clients at a time precisely because this work requires presence — ours and yours. We blend artistic vision with emotional intelligence, and we create space for the creative process to unfold thoughtfully rather than efficiently.
We are especially intentional about creating an environment where all clients feel fully supported. We work regularly with neurodivergent and creatively wired individuals and approach each session with the flexibility and attunement that kind of work requires. For our Confidence & Intimacy and Life & Legacy sessions, we offer in-person image reveals, because seeing your photographs for the first time should feel as meaningful as creating them.
