Little Shit: The Adventure Cat Who Started It All
She fit in the palm of a hand when Ashley found her.
It was a college biology lab in the woods, an unlikely place for a life to change and there she was. Tiny, certain, and completely unbothered by the improbability of the moment. Ashley brought her home, and from that day forward, they were never apart.
She named her Little Shit. If you knew her, you would understand immediately.
Little Shit did not become an adventure cat gradually. She was born one. From the earliest days she accompanied Ashley into the world with a kind of quiet authority that most creatures twice her size never manage. When Ashley met Nicholas, Shit gained a second human to claim and in that moment, something shifted. As a family, they made their way to the Pacific Northwest, where she stepped into a new role as Nicholas’s muse.
The Pacific Northwest changed everything about the scope of her adventures. What had already been a life of movement and curiosity became something extraordinary. She chased waterfalls in old growth forests. She explored the ocean and the stillness of mountain lakes. She walked trails at her own pace and borrowed the shoulders of the humans beside her when the terrain suited that better. She traveled on airplanes and ferries, on boats and trains, in cars with the windows cracked exactly right. She arrived everywhere with the same energy: present, unimpressed by the fuss, and ready for whatever came next.
She was, without question, a personality. And Nicholas documented her the way he documents every subject worth documenting — with intention, with attention to the small details, and with the understanding that what looks like an ordinary moment rarely is.
It was Little Shit who inspired the Life & Legacy offering at Eighth Square Studio.
Not as an abstract concept, but as a felt truth. Because when you love a soul companion the way Ashley loved her — the way both of them loved her — you understand viscerally what is at stake when you do not document the small things. The way she curled into a shoulder on a long drive. The particular quality of her attention when something caught her interest on a trail. The softness of an afternoon that felt entirely unremarkable until it was gone.
We built this offering because those moments deserve to be preserved. Not after the fact, not in memory alone, but in images that hold the detail and warmth of a life actually lived.
Almost a year ago, Little Shit got sick. It was sudden and unexpected — the kind of shift that arrives without warning and changes the texture of everything. Ashley noticed her slowing, the way you notice things when you have spent years paying attention to someone you love. She recognized it for what it was. And she reached out to schedule a session.
Three days before the session, Little Shit passed suddenly and unexpectedly within hours.
There are no words adequate to that kind of loss. What we can say is this: we are profoundly grateful for every image that exists of her — from the earliest days in Ashley's hands to the mountains and waterways of the Pacific Northwest, to the quiet ordinary moments that a camera caught simply because someone understood their value. Those photographs are not decorative. They are irreplaceable. They are the reason we remember the small things clearly instead of watching them soften at the edges of memory.
And we are honest about what we carry from her story: the weight of never having enough time. The reminder that the session we keep meaning to schedule is the one that matters most.
